Running in Circles: a case of identity

The stories and photos are literally at our fingertips, especially in light of social media. People who are making a difference. Organizations that are running effective programs that impact thousands. Problems being solved. Lives being changed. I love reading stuff like this; it’s inspiring. But I’ve also come to realize that, if I’m not careful, it becomes a slippery slope. It’s easy for me to compare myself to others, especially those working with other non-profits or ministries. Not comparing in a way that is judgmental of them, but condemning of myself. “I’m not doing enough” or “they are way more effective than me” run through my head more than I’d like to admit. And so I begin the mental checklist that can basically be summed up in two items: Do more. Be more. And so I strive, oh I strive. I aim to help more people, listen to more sermons, read more inspiring books, learn new skills, pray more, do more things that make me feel like I’m doing more and being more. Check. Check. Check. The list gets marked off. But really, I’m running in circles because checklists don’t get to the root of the issue (shocking, I know). […]

Encouragement for the single in a new town

Perhaps you got a job in a new town, moved to work with a ministry in another country, or are in school far from family and friends. Whatever the reason may be, you are now in a new place and quite by yourself. To the single who moved away from everything familiar and is feeling a bit lonely, I get it. New chapters and new locations are exciting, as it usually includes the unfolding of things you’ve planned for and dreamed of. But let’s be honest, while traveling somewhere on your own can be a bit intimidating, moving on your own to a place where you have no close friends or family can be downright scary. As a single girl who moved to South Africa, I understand. There are rough days. Sometimes you just want to go to a coffee shop with your best friend and talk about life (because let’s be honest, a FaceTime call just doesn’t quite do it). Sometimes you wish you could drive over to your parent’s house for the evening. But the reality hits that you can’t. And it’s hard. Please don’t give up. I wish I could sit down with you over a cup of […]

5 Ideas for life-giving rest + recharge

Life can be a little crazy at times. I want to live a life of passion and purpose, but even (and at times especially) when I’m doing something I’m passionate about, I easily get caught up in the to-do lists and tasks of the day. I run myself dry. I’m human and don’t function well in a 24/7 work mode. Know the feeling? If I truly want to thrive, not just survive, I need that time to reset. I know that I need time to reset, but recently I was challenged because I realized that many times when I needed to recharge, I found myself just randomly filling the time. But when I take that time to stop – with hopes of resting and recharging – I have to ask myself, “Am I filling that time with things that are truly life-giving?” Now, I realize that not everyone can carve out huge chunks of time, but to get you started, here are some ideas that I personally have found helpful… 1. Spend time with the Lord This is the space where I can find true rest and peace amidst the craziness of life. It’s here that I am reminded of who […]

It’s the weekend || my favorite things

It’s Sunday, one of those few days that I (usually) have “recharge time”. I love quiet afternoons where I can simply enjoy some moments of silence and not feeling pressured to accomplish a to-do list. It’s so refreshing and something that I always look forward to. And honestly, it’s something that I need. Amidst the hustle and bustle of life, I need to have those time where I can just slow down and reset. So today I wanted to share some of my current “favorite things” – specifically those that are incorporated into my recharge time… Currently reading…”I Don’t Wait Anymore” I got the book “I Don’t Wait Anymore” by Grace Thornton for Christmas, and it has been such a wonderful read. It’s one of those books that is like a breath of fresh air, because it’s what I needed to hear. In it, Grace shares her journey of letting go of her dreams and taking hold of what God had created her for. And it’s the very same thing He created ALL of us for – knowing HIM. Although it has been both challenging and convicting, it’s also been so very encouraging to hear her story and the things the Lord […]

Reclaiming Your Freedom

I’ve always considered myself a fairly organized person. Lists, planners, a place for everything, schedules organized by the hour, and notes on my phone that are full of checklists. Not that they always get used – but it gives me a certain level of stability and mental clarity to know that they are there. Despite my attempts at managing life, more and more I’ve found myself stressed out – unable to wrap my mind around the massive to-do list and the items on my schedule that seemed never ending. I began to consider the fact that perhaps I’m not the organized person that I once thought I was. In fact, I came to the somewhat shocking conclusion that my life is a mess. However, I also understand that one’s life doesn’t normally go from seemingly organized to chaos overnight, meaning that there must be a root cause to all of this. I wasn’t necessarily searching for an answer as I couldn’t even quite understand what was going on – why was I constantly stressed and overwhelmed? But slowly over time, I noticed patterns in my life. As uncomfortable as it is to admit, I was confronted with my lack of […]
